Chapter Three
Ty’s car was not a four-wheel drive, and it didn’t have a high wheel base either. It was also old. However, it suited him perfectly because it was cheap to run, easy to park, and not a target for thieves. Except that, right now, driving along this rutted track, he was beginning to worry that a rock would rip out his undercarriage or something equally alarming.
Devin had warned him that the track was bumpy, but this was a whole different dimension from bumpy in his mind. Devin had also said there were “a couple” of gates he’d have to open and close. So far, Ty had jumped out to open five gates for himself, and he was hoping there weren’t too many more. He’d always thought “a couple” meant two. Wasn’t three known as a “thruple” these days? Anyway, five was enough. He was beginning to think walking the track might have been smarter than driving. Especially since he only had a few things in a backpack for the night. Clean underwear, boxers to sleep in, a toothbrush, and that was about it. Nothing too heavy to carry anyway.
Then, at last, he rounded a bend and saw the cabin. Damn, it was picture-postcard perfect, with a huge verandah around it and an honest-to-God fireplace on the verandah against the cabin wall. As Ty’s car bounced to a stop, Devin came out the front door, waving at him and pointing around back of the cabin. Ty waved back, admiring Devin in old jeans with ragged cuffs and a hole in one knee and a baggy, misshapen green sweatshirt. Even in tatty old clothing, he looked delicious.
Ty drove slowly around back of the cabin and parked in the barn beside what he guessed was Devin’s car. Not an SUV or a truck and not a classy sports car either. Just a regular Ford like Ty himself drove, although a much newer one than his.
Ty climbed out of his car, grabbing his small backpack from the passenger seat, and followed Devin to the back door of the cabin, which wasn’t big, but then it didn’t need to be. All it needed was a bed and that awesome fireplace as far as Ty was concerned.
“This place looks amazing,” he said.
“I hope you’re not going to be disappointed. It’s not the Allegheny Hilton, you know.”
“I was sold on it as soon as I saw the fireplace.”
Devin grinned. “We can light a fire in it and cook hot dogs on sticks over the fire like we did as kids if you like.”
Ty laughed. “That sounds like a lot of fun. What are the bugs like here though? Will we end up covered in mosquito bites?”
“Not a problem. We have a bug zapper lantern and citronella candles. At least we used to. I expect they’re still around here somewhere.”
As Devin spoke, he led Ty inside into a spacious room. There was a fireplace, which likely backed onto the one on the porch and shared a chimney with it.
